Windows Phone outsells the iPhone

Windows Phone outsells the iPhone

It seems as if every other person in the world wants an iPhone. But 24 countries did not. Then again, there’s a huge difference between wanting something and actually affording it.

Windows Phone units outsold the iPhone in the Q3 of 2013, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) report. Microsoft willingly helped out by breaking down their stats, with tech sites such as TechRadar reporting on it earlier this month. Meanwhile, Forbes has published the 24 specific countries:

[unordered_list style=”green-dot”]
  • Chile
  • Colombia
  • Czech Republic
  • Egypt
  • Ecuador
  • Finland
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • India
  • Italy
  • Kenya
  • Kuwait
  • Malaysia
  • Mexico
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Peru
  • Poland
  • Saudi Arabia
  • South Africa
  • Thailand
  • Ukraine
  • U.A.E.
  • Vietnam

Admittedly, these are emerging markets, the period does not cover iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display sales, and Windows Phone, being the relatively newcomer, has a lot of room above it. But it’s interesting that the Microsoft OS is inching its way into the low- and midrange segments strongly enough to pose noteworthy numbers. It should be pointed out also that Windows Phone still falls second to Android in secondary markets where the iOS has slipped.

Instead of the Windows Phone vs. iPhone issue, however, the more interesting take on this is Nokia vs. iOS. Yes, it’s a choice between solid hardware and effective software. The Android-powered Nokia is right around the corner, but it is rumored to be entry-level. What would be interesting to see is iOS running on the best Lumia hardware. That could be a power phone on paper.
