It used to be just a dream or an irony or even ignorance. Other times, it was annoying.

But now that Facebook is finally supporting the metadata tag in posts, your hashtag has just become the real deal.

A hashtag is any word or phrase prefixed by the pound sign (#). When enabled, you can click on it and discover relevant posts using the same hashtag. It’s like an automagic search through the a database or, in this case, a website.

According to Facebook, now you can:

[unordered_list style=”bullet”]
  • Search for a specific hashtag from your search bar. For example, #NBAFinals.
  • Click on hashtags that originate on other services, such as Instagram.
  • Compose posts directly from the hashtag feed and search results.

The hashtag support on Facebook is a much-awaited feature. There had been a lot of talk but until now, it didn’t walk. And unlike many of the changes Facebook has implemented in the past, it looks like this particular tweak won’t get as much flak despite the unavoidable ridicule.

Facebook is following the footsteps of Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and Pinterest, which have been using the hashtag for eternity. Even Flickr beat them to the punch.

But now that it’s here, brace yourselves for a #hashtagdeluge.
