Starting today, November 24, SM North Edsa will be powered by a 1.5-megawatt solar facility, making it the world’s biggest solar-powered mall.

Solar Philippines Commercial Rooftop Projects Inc., in partnership with SM Malls, outfitted the North Edsa parking building with 5,760 solar panels and 60 inverters covering more than 12,000 square meters.

The 1.5MW plant, will be able to augment the mall’s power requirements. According to SM, this can power 16,000 light fixtures, 59 escalators, and 20 elevators of SM North at the same time. This represents 5 percent of the mall’s total electricity requirements. The solar power plant is expected to operate for over 25 years and offset an estimated 40,000 tons of CO2, or the equivalent of planting 200,000 trees.

Also in the pipeline are SM Dasmarinas, which will have a capacity of 0.8MW using 3,740 solar panels, and SM Mall of Asia, which will have a capacity of 2.7MW using 10,500 solar panels.
