Samsung GALAXY S6, S6 Edge: What’s new?
User Rating

Following numerous leaks and teasers, the Samsung GALAXY S6 and S6 Edge are finally here. Samsung officially unveiled its 2015 flagship smartphones during a press conference at the annual Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain.

With 2014 and GALAXY S5 not doing Samsung any good, will these new GALAXY phones be the company’s comeback? Let’s see.

What’s new?
The first thing you’ll notice is that Samsung gave the GALAXY S6 and S6 Edge a complete redesign, ditching the cheap plastic body for premium metal and glass.

The S6 sports a flat display, metal frame, and glass front and back panels. The same goes for the S6 Edge with just one distinct design addition: a curved display similar to that of the Note Edge, but less aggressive and found on both sides of the phone.

That’s not all. Samsung packed the two smartphones with the latest technology to match their all-new design. Here are a few of the notable features of the GALAXY S6 and S6 Edge:

  • Front and rear cameras. Samsung equipped each of the two phones with an f/1.9 lens and high-resolution sensors on their 5MP front and 16MP rear cameras. The Quick Launch feature allows users to instantly access the camera from any screen in just 0.7 second by double clicking the home button. Other camera features are Auto Real-time High Dynamic Range, Smart Optical Image Stabilization, and IR Detect White Balance.
  • Wireless and fast charging. The S6 and S6 Edge work with any wireless pad that supports WPC and PMA standards. Samsung also claims that 10 minutes of wired charging can provide about 4 hours of usage. That’s 1.5 times faster than the GALAXY S5, the company says. We have to say goodbye, however, to removable batteries because the potentially larger and longer-lasting batteries are built in the S6 devices.
  • Samsung Pay. Apple Pay could be getting a new, serious rival with Samsung’s mobile payment service. Samsung Pay works with both MasterCard and Visa via Near Field Communication (NFC) and Magnetic Source Technology (MST) technology.
  • Gear VR. Both the S6 and S6 Edge have their own Gear VR, which is smaller than the Gear VR for the Note 4 and comes with improvements such as USB charging.
  • Storage options. Yes, you now have the options for a 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB internal memory, but that’s because Samsung omitted the microSD card slot to maximize the devices slimness. No worries, though, because free 115GB of Microsoft OneDrive storage for two years was thrown in in exchange.
