Last May 24 at the Clark Speedway in Pampanga, Shell introduced the participants to the upcoming Eco-marathon Asia in Malaysia. A grand total of 10 entries from top engineering schools in the country hope to do our nation proud with their eco-vehicles built from the ground up.

Representing the country are veteran teams from  Mapua Institute of Technology, University of Santo Tomas, and Don Bosco Technical College. Newcomers from De La Salle University–Manila, Technological Institute of the Philippines–Quezon City and Manila, University of San Carlos, and Polytechnic University of the Philippines–Manila also hope to make a splash. They joined in the Prototype and Urban Concept categories.

Prototype and Urban Concept vehicles run on different sources, hoping to achieve maximum mileage. Examples of sources range from the traditional gasoline to hybrids of solar and electricity. The current record for this year’s competition is roughly 1500 kmpl on gasoline from the Laval University in Canada.

The Asian leg of the Eco-Marathon will be held at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 4 to 7, 2013.
