Virtual racing competition Nissan GT Academy Philippines drew thousands of aspiring racers from local mall competitions in its over two month’s span.

According to Nissan Philippines, Inc. (NPI) President and Managing Director Antonio Zara, the competition has already engaged nearly 20,000 race trials in the 13 Live Events held  in various malls across the country. The battles however remain open for aspiring racers until June this year.

During a Live Event, participants play a virtual racing game, the Gran Turismo 6, inside Nissan’s gaming pod. Players need to best the other players’ time. The top 20 finalists who rank the best time during the whole qualifying period will race at the GT Academy National Finals in July.

Outstanding performers in the National Finals will undergo a  series of challenges that will test their driving skills, mental and physical agility, and technical ability, in order to qualify for the Race Camp Week in Silverstone, UK this August.

In a media cup held last May 29, Zara lauded the initial success of the racing platform. “Ever since we launched the program last March 25, we at Nissan are overwhelmed  to see how the Filipino GT players rose to our call, and answered the challenge of making good time on the virtual track in their quest to become real race car driver,” Zara said during the event.

NPI also announced during the media cup that another young Filipino race car driver who has raced for the Status Grand Prix, Marlon Stockinger, will serve as mentor and guest-judge of the Filipino finalists. “Following the footsteps of Marlon, we are very hopeful that a Filipino will emerge as the next international motorsports sensation,” Zara expressed.

Other scheduled Live Events of the Nissan GT Academy are as follows:
