Microsoft dives into the wearable trend

Wondering when will Microsoft join the smartwatch fun? They just did.  The PC giant just announced its first shot at the wearable trend—the Microsoft Band. And this one doesn’t discriminate: it syncs with Windows phones and pairs with iPhone and Android devices, too.

The Microsoft Band is a health-focused device designed to be worn 24 hours a day. The Band has 10 smart sensors for 24-hour heart monitoring, calorie burn measurement, advanced sleep quality tracking, and more. Guided workouts curated by Gold’s Gym, Shape, Men’s Fitness, and Muscle & Fitness are also among the features of the Microsoft Band.

Like most smartwatches, the Microsoft Band can receive notifications, including incoming calls, emails, texts, and social media updates, reminders from your calendar, as well as access to Cortana, your personal assistant on your phone. You can also use the Band to pay for your Starbucks coffee by simply scanning your wrist.

The plastic band sports a full-color touchscreen and an adjustable strap. It pairs with your smartphone using Bluetooth. The two 100mAh rechargeable lithium-ion polymer batteries should give the Band a 48-hour life on standby. Aiming to accompany you on your vigorous activities, the Microsoft Band is also dust- and splash-resistant.

Launched alongside the Microsoft Band is the  Microsoft Health. The company’s new platform provides cloud service for consumers and the industry to store and combine health and fitness data. This health and fitness platform is available through the Microsoft Health app—a companion app for the Microsoft Band, which is compatible with Android phones running 4.3 or 4.4, iPhones running iOS 7.1 or 8, and Windows Phone devices with the 8.1 update. Microsoft Health links up with other fitness apps and services, including MyFitnessPal, RunKeeper, and MapMyFitness.

The Microsoft Band is now available in the US in limited quantities from the and starting October 30 at Microsoft stores for $199.
