HTC has released their new device, and it’s not a smartphone or a tablet. The RE camera is a digital camera in a curious form factor and it can pair with your iOS or Android device.

This new simplified shooter modifies the typical means of taking pictures by removing the viewfinder and screen interface, leaving just a 1/2.3-inch, 16MP CMOS sensor in a pipe-like body that is water-resistant up to 1m. This L-shaped design could make the camera easier to grip and handle.

The RE camera has a 146˚ wide angle f/2.8 lens, can capture 1080p Full HD videos at 30fps and 4x slow motion at 720p, and has time-lapse and slow-motion features. The camera pairs with an Android (4.3 and above) and iOS device via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and streams photos and videos instantly to your mobile device. The RE app turns your smartphone or tablet into a a live viewfinder and content browser.

With a microSD slot and a 5-pin microUSB port, connectivity shouldn’t be a problem. HTC claims that the 820mAh can support 1 hour and 50 minutes of continuous Full HD video recording.

The RE wakes up automatically when held. The camera can shift functions (from still photo taking to video recording) depending on how you press the shutter button.

The RE digital camera is now available for pre-order at $199, and comes in blue, white, and orange.
