HTC One (M8): What you need to know

HTC One (M8): What you need to know
User Rating

What’s the fuss? HTC has just unveiled its 2014 flagship smartphone: the One (M8). And here’s what you need to know.

HTC isn’t known for aggressive and well-funded marketing campaigns, but when the HTC One arrived last year, it blew the competition away–at least, as far as critics were concerned. Following the “best smartphone of 2013″ isn’t a small feat, so let’s see what HTC pulled out of its hat for this One (M8).

1. The name

HTC One is also pretty hard to follow name-wise. Should the 2014 flagship be called the HTC Two? HTC One II? HTC One 2.0? HTC One Plus? Nah, says HTC. Stick with the One name and add a descriptive clause in there: (M8).

What does M8 mean? Metal #8. Apparently, the HTC One (M8) is HTC’s eight-generation metal model.

2. Two rear cameras

The UltraPixel camera was pretty revolutionary. But don’t expect HTC to change the way you look at pixels again. This time around, HTC opts to change the way you look at smartphone rear cameras and DOF by putting two rear cameras on the One (M8). With two cameras–one UltraPixel and one regular for detecting depth–you can choose which subject in your photo is in focus and adjust the DOF accordingly after the photo is taken.

3. More, more, more!

More screen real estate at 5 inches. More storage with the microSD slot. More battery life with 2600mAh. More BlinkFeed sources–official and unofficial. More features: tap to unlock, swipe to unlock and launch latest app, launch camera with a volume down press

4. Cool flip case

The perforated Lite Brite cover allows you to see notifications and interact with the screen. The One (M8) detects when the cover is attached and lights up just the needed pixels for the information to be visible through the cover. The screen will also detect your touch gestures even through the case. And it looks cool, too.
