Better internet service you say? That is something that may be within arm’s length.

Over the weekend, Globe Telecom fired up the country’s first cell site that uses the 700MHz spectrum, located near Hardin ng Bougainvillea in UP Diliman, Quezon City. The cell site registered speeds that ranged between 60 to 100Mbps when the company made tests around the site.

The 2.5-meter 700MHz antenna mounted on a Globe cell site in Diliman, Quezon City.

The testing of the cell site came less than a week after Globe acquired half of San Miguel Corporation’s telecommunication assets, which included the 700MHz frequency.

Globe Senior Vice President for Program Governance Joel Agustin said that this benefits Globe customers within a radius of 2.2 kilometers from the cell tower that uses LTE-compatible devices, including Samsung’s S6 Edge+, Note 5, S7, S7 Edge, and J5 2016, as well as some Huawei devices. Users of devices that are not compatible with LTE will still benefit from the deployment of 700MHz cell sites as this will lead to decongestion of users on other frequencies.

According to Agustin, Globe will activate 200 sites using the 700Mhz band progressively. The 700MHz frequency is considered a key in providing faster internet speeds in the country as it can easily penetrate buildings and walls and has greater coverage with fewer infrastructures needed compared to frequencies on higher bands.

Officials of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), led by Deputy Commissioner Edgardo Cabarios, inspected the site last Monday, June 6, 2016.
