All-new MINI Convertible reinvents open-top driving
User Rating

At a time when vehicles are engineered more toward utility, MINI wants to bring back the joy of driving with the release of its all-new Convertible, a vehicle out to redefine the open-top driving experience.

The new MINI Convertible comes  in two variants: the Cooper S Convertible  and the John Cooper Works (JCW) Convertible.

Both models arrive with an electrically powered soft top that can open or close in under 18 seconds via a toggle switch on front roof frame. The soft top can be opened and closed even while the car is running up to 30kph. While stationary, it can be controlled using the remote key. Enhancing the capabilities of the soft top is a sliding roof function, which allows the front section of the top to be retracted to continuously variable levels by up to 40cm.

The MINI Cooper S Convertible is powered by a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine with a peak output of 192hp and maximum torque of 280Nm from 1,250rpm. The torque can even be increased up to 300Nm through an overboost function. The average fuel consumption of the MINI Cooper S Convertible is pegged at 5.8L/100km.

Meanwhile, the MINI JCW Convertible can storm away at a more powerful 231hp and up to 320Nm torque, all while maintaining a fuel efficiency of 6.8L/100km.

Leading the launch of the new MINI Convertible were Willy Tee Tan, President of British United Automobiles, and Sunny Medalla, Head of MINI Asia.

A revamped MINI

Bringing a go-kart driving touch is the Convertible’s innovative suspension and steering design. The vehicle comes fitted with a low center of gravity, high-quality suspension, and increased wheelbase and track width. Under the hood, MINI integrated a single-joint strut front axle and multilink rear axle, which is a unique feat in the small car segment. Adding rigidity to the vehicle are aluminum swivel bearings and high-strength steel materials.

The electromechanical power steering with Servotronic steering technology gives the MINI Convertible more precise cornering or maneuvering abilities on low speeds. The MINI JCW Convertible, on the other hand, has a Dynamic Damper Control system for enhanced driving control be it on Comfort or Sport mode.

The new MINI Convertible also rocks a bigger build at 3,821 x 1,727, 1,415mm compared to previous iterations, while the Cooper S Convertible is longer at 3,850mm. Luggage space is also expanded, and now comes with an Easy Load function that allows the soft top frame to be raised when the roof is closed.

Inside, the Convertibles are constructed out of premium materials and delicate craftsmanship. The Leg and headroom are both expanded for more comfort, while the seats are adjusted to ensure convenient entry and exit.

MINI makes sure driving fun doesn’t have to compromise in safety and assist features. The new MINIs come with sensor-based Park Distance Controls, Head-Up Display, Driving Assistant system with camera-based collision and pedestrian warning with initial brake function, high beam assistant, road sign detection, as well as a Parking Assistant and rear view camera. LED headlamps, fog lamps, and an Excitement Package—which includes LED interior, ambient lighting, and a projection of the MINI logo on the ground—add extra kick to the overall driving experience.

The MINI Cooper Convertible S and the John Cooper Works Convertible are available at the MINI Global City and MINI Roadshow Greenhills showrooms for P3,150,000 and P3,950,000, respectively.
