Update to iOS 8 without losing your mind

Update to iOS 8 without losing your mind

Apple’s big OS update of the year is here and it brings along with it some major tweaks: improved audio and video sharing in Messages, a new Health app for fitness tracking, a smarter, customizable keyboard, self-destructing text and audio messages, iCloud Drive file storage, better search through Spotlight, and the soon-to-be-available “Continuity,” which allows you to seamlessly switch from activities on your mobile device to your computer, among others.

But wait! What’s this we hear that you need up to 5.7GB of free space before you can update to the new OS? Don’t freak out just yet. The new operating system only needs around 1.1GB of space, but remember, you’re downloading a new system update and all the contents are stored in a compressed file. Once the download is complete, your iOS device will start unpacking and will need enough storage to handle both the compressed file and all its uncompressed contents. That means you need some massive free space on your device, so you better start backing up then deleting apps and other files from your gadget.

There’s no easy fix to free up space, but you can opt to download iOS 8 via iTunes to avoid the huge space requirement (this method still requires free space, but not nearly as much as the over-the-air upgrade method).

Want to upgrade your current iOS devices to Apple’s latest mobile operating system? Here’s how:

1. Check if your device can handle the update. iOS 8 is compatible with the following:

  • 5th-gen iPod Touch
  • iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad Air, iPad mini

2. Back up your device. This includes your apps, photos, most recent settings, etc. All of these will be cleared when updating to a new

iOS, so you better back them up to your iCloud account or your hard drive.

3. Download iOS 8 over the air or via iTunes.

  • OTA update: If you’re away from your computer but feel the need to update right away, make sure you have a stable Wi-Fi connection. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and click the Download and Install button for iOS 8. Follow the instructions and make sure your device is not interrupted.
  • Via iTunes: First, make sure that you have iTunes version 11.4. Open iTunes and then click iTunes > Check for Updates to install the latest version. Plug in your device to your computer, click on the upper right of iTunes’ toolbar where you’ll see your device’s name, and then click the Update button. Click the Download and Update button. Make sure your device is connected to your computer until your device restarts.
